Pulse shaping with
the Femtolite fiber laser
Friedrich-Schiller Univ., Jena
At
Photonics West 2003, IMRA America, in collaboration with
researchers at Friedrich-Schiller Univ., presented results of
phase-only pulse shaping using the Femtolite fiber laser (model
A-10-SP) as the oscillator source.
Using a pulse shaper with
phase-only filtering, as shown in Figure 1, Dr. Mark Bischoff &
team showed that it is possible to generate a huge variety of
different pulse shapes.

Generation
of high-frequency pulse trains is a particularly interesting
application. Figure 2 shows a case in which the pulse shaper,
starting from a single laser pulse from the Femtolite, generated a
pulse train of several pulses with a temporal separation of 400 fs,
corresponding to a repetition frequency of 2.5 Terahertz.
In addition
to generating pulse trains, phase-only pulse filtering can be used
for other functions such as pedestal reduction.
