    What does IMRA stand for?

IMRA is an acronym for "Institut Minoru de Recherche Avancée", so named for the first facility opened by Aisin in Valbonne/Nice France in 1986. The idea of a global IMRA research and development network was born in Japan and championed by Mr. Minoru Toyoda, the Honorary Advisor to the All Aisin Group. Aisin is Japan's largest, and one of the world's top ten manufacturers of automotive related components.

    What is a fiber laser?

A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.(Source: The Photonics Dictionary - with permission of Laurin Publishing)

    What is an ultrafast laser?

A laser capable of generating light pulses that last only a few femtoseconds. This can be achieved by nonlinear filtering to increase bandwidth and compress the pulse or by passive mode-locking or synchronous pumping in conjunction with pulse-shaping techniques. What is a modelocked laser?

A laser that functions by modulating the energy content of each mode internally to give rise selectively to energy bursts of high peak power and short duration in the picosecond domain. (Source: The Photonics Dictionary - with permission of Laurin Publishing)
